Friedel-Crafts acylation of alkyl aromatic compounds possessing various side chain lengths with propionic anhydride was investigated with different zeolite catalysts like zeolite beta, USY, ZSM-5 and SSZ-35 exhibiting medium and large pores with various combinations of channel connectivity. It was found that the conversion of aromatics increased with increasing of zeolite channel size. The highest conversions were obtained over zeolite beta as compared with USY, SSZ-35, and ZSM-5. The effects of amount of catalyst, reaction temperature, molar ratio of acylating agent to substrate, and type of acylating agent on the catalytic activity and the product distribution were also examined. |
