An Atomistic Simulation of Facilitated Transport of Olefin in a Membrane with Silver Ions |

Facilitated transport(FT) membranes with fixed site carriers have attracted much attention lately, because it is capable of increasing permeability and permselectivity simultaneously. Recently, Kang and co-workers reported that the transport of olefin molecules through FT membranes using Ag carrier is much higher than that of paraffin molecules. In the present work, atomistic simulations for FT membrane are carried out to study the effects of structural changes on the permeability of the penetrnats. POZ(Poly(2-ethyl 2-oxazoline)) and PVP(Poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone)) are generated using Material Studio® and silver ions are added to these polymer matrices as a fixed site carrier. The diffusion of ethene and ethane as penetrants is then monitored and the diffusion coefficients are calculated. It is observed that the diffusivity of ethene is more sensitive to the variation of Ag+ concentrations than that of ethane which is unable to form complexes with silver ions. These results suggest that the solubility of olefin is enhanced by the presence of olefin-silver ion complexes, resulting in promotion of the transport of olefin molecule in a FT membrane. |
