Polarizing film is important optical component for liquid crystal display. This polarizing film is obtained by the orientation of dichroic materials such as polyiodine or dye molecules. Orientation of dichroic material is achieved by drawing the film. During drawing, the dichroic material is oriented in agreement with the host polymer film, and consequently, anisotropic absorption of light in the visible wavelength range is generated. As a result, two crossed polarizing films hardly transmit light, whereas two parallel polarizing films are highly transparent in TN liquid crystal system. In this study, as the dichroic material, azo dyes were synthesized and PVA polarizing films were manufactured using those dichroic dyes. The optical properties(transmittance and degree of polarization) of polarizing film were investigated by UV-Vis. spectrophotometer with a Glan-Thompson polarizer. |
