Photothermal therapy (PTT) is an innovative strategy for cancer treatment due to its selective and localized therapeutic effect by laser irradiation. Melanin is an effective absorber of light and can extend to near infrared (NIR) regions. In this study, we present a novel agent based on liposomal melanin (lipomelanin) for PTT. Lipomelanin was prepared by a thin film-hydration method and the photothermal effect of lipomelanin was investigated in NIR 808 nm laser at 2 W/cm2 for 7 min. Lipomelanin was spherical in shape, with an average diameter of approximately 190 nm. After laser irradiation at 808 nm for 8 min, the temperature of pure water increased by only 4°C, whereas the temperature of lipomelanin solution increased by 40°C at a concentration of 0.2 mg/mL. Lipomelanin could be easily prepared and well dispersed in aqueous media with high colloidal stability. According to the results, lipomelanin is expected to become more powerful and beneficial as a novel agent for PTT. |
