Phenol-Formaldehy (PF) resin, which is one of the thermosetting resins, has been widely used as adhesives, binders, and reinforced plastics for industrial materials. It shows excellent physical properties such as heat resistance, electrical insulation, flame retardant, and so on, and its carbonization yield is very high due to its high carbon content. On the other hand the void content of the carbonized bead is relatively wigher than that of other cross-linked resins such as cross-linked polystyrene because of the volatile materials of low molecular weight such as water vapor throughout carbonization process, which leads to loss of physical properties. It this study, thermal stability, micro structure, and physical properties of the phenol bead were examined by DSC,TGA,OM, SEM, and UTM with controlled cross-linking density by using cresol as a co-monomer |
