We have synthesized poly(oxyethylene)s containing alkylthioalkyl or alkylsulfonylalkyl side groups. To study the effect of the position of the sulfone group on the mesomorphic behavior, we intentionally fixed the length of the side group, such as 10 atoms in the side chain skeleton, to eliminate the effect of side chain length on the mesomorpic properties. Poly[(chloromethyl)oxirane], poly[(2-choroethyl)oxirane], poly[(3-chloropropyl)oxirane], and poly[(4-chlorobutyl)oxirane] were prepared, and then the chloro end group in the side chain was substituted by sodium octanethiolate, sodium heptanethilote, sodium hexanethiolate, and sodium pentanethiolate, respectively, to induce poly(oxyethylene)s containing alkylthioalkyl side goups. The thioether containing polymers were oxidized to poly(oxyethylene)s containing alkylsulfonylalkyl side goups. These polymers were characterized using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy, and gel permeation chromatography.
