제목 Aminosilane functionalization of Montmorillonite clay: Influence of solvents on the degree of intercalation
초록 Abstract

Montmorillonite clay has been treated with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane in the presence of various solvents such as water, tetrahydrofuran, ethylene glycol and toluene. Presence of organosilanes in modified clays has been further confirmed from the –CH asymmetric and symmetric stretching of >CH2 groups at 2920 and at 2855 cm-1. This interaction between the clay platelet and silane is further supported by 13C and 29Si-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Intercalation of aminosilanes between the clay layers have been confirmed from the increase in the average d-spacing obtained from X-ray diffraction (XRD). The two peaks observed in the x-ray diffraction results of clay modified with organosilanes in the water medium confirms the intercalation of amino silane as well as the tactoid formation. Thermogravimetric analysis reveals that the overall grafting yield of silane increases with increase in solvent surface energy.
