A study on drug release from core-shell nanofibers prepared by coaxial electrospinning |

Two different electrospinning processes, that is, blend and coaxial electrospinning, to incorporate a model drug salicylic (SA) into poly (lactic acid) (PLA) nanofibers were used to test their drug release behavior and compared with each other. For coaxial electrospinning, PLA was used as shell material and salicylic blended with chitosan or poly (ethylene glycol) was incorporated in the core of nanofibers. The feed rate of core was varied to find out the best value for production of complete core-shell structured nanofibers. SA loading percent in the core-shell nanofibers and its release rate were varied by the feed rate of core. The core-shell nanofibers fabricated at low feed rate of core showed a sustained release of SA during 7 days. With the increase in core feed rate, there were an associated increase in loading percent and accelerated release of SA. The resulting ultrafine core-shell nanofibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and tensile test. |
