Metastable polymer packaging for triggered transience of electronics |

Transient electronic systems are a new paradigm for electronic devices. Their ability to physically disappear after performing their intended function enables potential applications in biomedical diagnostics and sensors, and multifunctional devices with temporal functional profiles. Prior work in this area has been limited to water or biofluid based dissolution of electronics and packaging. We propose the use of metastable polymers that can be triggered to degrade and depolymerize in response to a variety of environmental stimuli in order to invoke transience. We present thermally triggered destruction of electronics based on acid-sensitive poly(phthalaldehyde) substrates with wax coatings that contain encapsulated acid microdroplets or microcapsules. |
