Smart Films Containing Acid-Sensitive Polymeric Dye |

Smart films were prepared from blending polymethylmethacrylate or polyurethane with acid-sensitive polymeric dye of distyryl type, followed by solvent-casting. Polymeric dye was obtained from a synthesis of dicyanopyrazine compound and methylmethacrylate monomer, and showed a reversible color change from reddish orange color to yellow according to the presence of acid environment. The acid-sensitivity for the blended films incorporating the polymeric dye of 0.5 % and 5 % by weight was investigated with their properties as well as molecular interaction between polymer and dye. It was found that these films could have a high potential as acid-sensitive and acid-detecting materials with good mechanical properties.
