Patterned Photonic Crystals for Microdisplays |

Mesoscopic hierarchical structures fabricated from monodisperse spherical colloids by self-assembly have attracted in recent days enormous research efforts for nanophotonics due to their potential uses as best performer of photonic crystals. Recent progress of such self-assembly approaches has shown that defect-free regular array could be easily grown by several clever ways combining well-established techniques including dip-coating and epitaxial growth. One of remaining issues for self-assembled photonic crystals is to engineer the crystal structures for photonic devices such as microdisplay, photonic integrated chips for guiding the light beam, and cavity for extracting or adding the light of specific frequency. Several research groups have suggested the clever fabrication methods for defective colloidal crystals including colloidal crystallization inside microchannels, two-photon-absorption polymerization, and surface-charge-induced colloidal crystallization. In this presentation, we will describe highly facile methods for the fabrication of photonic spheres and pixellated photonic-crystal cells by selective photon-induced polymerization in self-assembled colloidal crystal film. The patterned photonic crystals are applicable to microdisplays. |
