Structure Determination of New Halogen Substituted Banana-Shaped Molecules |

New three banana-shaped compounds, derivatives of 4,6-dichloro-1,3-phenylene-bis[4-(n-octyloxyphenyliminomethyl)benzoate] by varying the substituent (X = H, F and Cl), are investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and polarized optical microscopy (POM). The compound with X = H forms an enantiomeric nematic phase. The compounds with X = F and Cl form a nematic phase on heating, while on cooling it form a nematic phase and then a smectic A phase at low temperature monotropically. It is noted that in nematic phase, the molecules can self-assemble into a rod-like cylinder, which behaves like a nematic mesogene. |
