Synthesis of Polymerizable Telechelic PEG with Sulfonate End Group |

PEGs are unique in their material properties such as biocompatibility, non-toxicity and water-solublizing property, which is extremely useful for a variety of biomedical applications. Also many different types of functional PEG with specific functionality at one or both chain ends have been synthesized for special applications. In the present work, we are interested in the preparation of telechelic PEG with an anioinc sulfonate group at the one end and a polymerizable methacryloyl group at the other end of PEG chain. In the previous studies reported, Polymers modified by PEG with anionic sulfonate terminals have been proved to enhance the blood compatibility of the materials, which was demonstrated by so-called negative cilia model. By attaching methacryloyl group at the other chain-end, synthesis of homo- and various co-polymers with other vinylic comonomers, possessing a certain degree of sulfonated PEG graft, is possible. Some results on these synthesis will be presented.
