Photochromism is the reversible colour change undergone by a compound under UV irradiation. Spiropyran is one of the fascinating molecules exhibiting photochromic properties. Upon UV irradiation, spirocarbon-oxygen (C-O) bond of the colourless spiropyran is broken, producing coloured open isomers called merocyanine. The merocyanine may interact with their environment (i.e. solvent, matrix etal.) leading to different photochromic responses. Spiropyran-doped organic-inorganic hybrid coatings were prepared starting from glycidoxypropyl triethoxysilane(GPTMS) and vinyltriethoxysilane(VTES) by the sol-gel method. They were applied as a thin layer to polycarbonate sheets and the photochromic properties were tested. The resulting films showed a rapid and reversible colour change upon irradiation with UV light, leading to strong blue colouration. The effect of type of solvent dissolved the spiropyran was investigated.
