We demonstrate a facile and promising strategy to fabricate anisotropic magnetic microparticles via the microfluidic approach. Glass capillary tube-based microfluidic device is used to generate monodispersed emulsion droplets containing polystyrene and magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (i.e., MNPs). Uniform disk-shape magnetic microparticles can be obtained upon removal of the organic solvent from the emulsion droplets dispersed in an aqueous phase. In the presence of magnetic fields, it is found that the particles are elongated along the field direction. The particle shape deformation can be attributed to destabilization of MNPs upon solvent drying and their migration under the magnetic field or gravity. Notably, the aspect ratio of the anisotropic particles can be tuned by adjusting the magnetic field strength as well as the concentration of MNPs and polymer. |
