The sustained release of bioactive molecules (e.g., growth factors, cytokines, etc.) from delivery systems is a commonly accepted strategy for maintaining their long-term bioactivity and safety. However, the residue of toxic reagents, the use of harmful organic solvents and complex fabrication procedures of conventional delivery systems impede their clinical use. In this study, we developed polycaprolactone particles with unique leaf-stacked structures (LSS particles) using clinically feasible materials/procedures. The bioactive molecules (EGF, BMP-7 and BMP-2) were immobilized in the particles by simple immersion in the bioactive molecules solutions. The bioactive molecules were continuously released from the LSS particles for sufficient period. Our findings demonstrated that the unique leaf-stacked structure of the LSS particles provides a simple but clinically applicable platform for effective delivery of growth factors as well as a variety of other bioactive molecules. |
