Organic-inorganic nanocomposites for a long-term fuel cell operation |

Perfluorinated sulfonated acid (PFSA) membranes including Nafion® have been utilized as proton exchange membranes (PEMs) for fuel cell applications owing to their high proton conductivity and membrane stability. Even PFSA membranes with high feasibility are needed to compensate their drawbacks such as high fuel permeability. Incorporating a small amount of functional nanosized fillers may be an effective solution to fabricate desirable PEMs without any big loss of membrane performances and additional production cost. The functionality of inorganic fillers significantly affected the overall PEM performances. In particular, a kind of inorganic fillers contributed to eliminate peroxide radical which derived from undesirable reaction at the cathode. Up to now, the relationship between radical stability and long-term operation in the nanocomposite has been carefully investigated in comparison with that based on pristine Nafion®-recast membrane. |
