Polymer/silicate organic-inorganic hybrid materials have received much attention in recent years. Silicate is useful due to its high thermal stability, mechanical strength and modulus, but is usually very brittle. Polymeric hydrogel, on the other hand, is finding many applications in science and industry. However, it is known that the mechanical properties in the swollen state generally are poor. PHEA, α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl-DL-aspartamide), is a class of poly(amino acids), which has been widely studied as a biodegradable and biocompatible polymer with potential biomedical applications. In this work, we prepared hybrid materials based on PHEA and silicate. The sol-gel process in the presence of TEOS and modified PHEA was used to introduce inorganic silicate phase within the polymer gel matrix. FT-IR and NMR were employed to analyze the chemical structure of the hybrids. Also the morphology, thermal, and swelling properties of hybrid gels were examined. |
