Effect of promoters on the stability of Co/CeO2 catalysts for the water-gas shift reaction |

We prepared a series of alkali (Na and K) and alkaline earth metal (Ca and Ba) promoted Co/CeO2 catalysts to investigate the effect of the promoter on the stability of the catalyst in the high-temperature water-gas shift (WGS) reaction. Characterization of the catalysts using X−ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and O2−temperature programmed desorption (TPD) revealed that the alkali metal-doped Co/CeO2 formed a cobalt-rich surface with high oxygen mobility compared to the alkaline earth metal-doped catalysts. The activity results revealed higher performance by the alkali metal-doped catalysts than those doped with alkaline earth metals. However, a time-on-stream study showed that alkaline earth metal-doped catalysts have higher stability (50 h) than alkali metal-doped catalysts. The deactivation of the alkali metal-doped Co/CeO2 catalysts was attributed to oxidation of the active phase of the metallic cobalt, which is supported by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) analysis of the used catalysts. |
