Microalgae has recently attracted great attention as a feedstock for biodiesel production. Microalgae was cultivated in a race-way pond containing seawater from East Sea and biodiesel was produced using the microalgae. Compared with conventional two-step biodiesel production process where oil extraction step from microalgae and transesterification step of the oil are carried out sequentially, one-step direct method in which both steps are performed simultaneously is believed to have several advantages such as simplifing the process of biodiesel production, and thus, enhancing economic feasibility of biodiesel production from microalgae. The effect of agitation on the biodiesel production was negligible. Chloroform and sulfuric acid were the best combination of extraction solvent and catalyst. The optimum temperature and reaction time were 70 °C and 60 minutes and oil extraction yield and biodiesel conversion were 98.1% and 90.3%, respectively under the optimum operating condition. |
