Biodiesel production using whole cell biocatalyst ; from biocatalyst preparation to bioreactor operation |
초록 |
Biodiesel is a renewable and carbon-neutral bioenergy. Chemical catalysts have been used for the production of biodiesel but they have several drawbacks such as requiring much energy. As an alternative to chemical catalysts, enzyme has attracted much attention but it is very expensive and easily deactivated by methanol. In this study, the feasibility of whole cell biocatalyst for biodiesel production was investigated. Rhizopus oryzae NBRC 4697 showed higher performance than other candidates. This fungus was immobilized onto activated carbon coated-polyurethane and vacuum drying of the immobilized cells was found to be much better than natural and freeze drying in terms of biodiesel conversion. Methanol feeding was optimized to minimize its inhibitory effect on cells with maintaining high biodiesel conversion. The effects of moisture and glycerol were also investigated. A packed-bed bioreactor containing the immobilized cells was operated under circulating mode and the effects of operating variables on its performance were investigated. |
