Photo-initiated dispersion polymerization of styrene was carried out in ethanol at 70 ℃ in the presence of multifunctional poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) macro-RAFT agents as both a stabilizer and a photo-iniferter. Poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone-co-4-vinylbenzyl chloride) was first synthesized and then the benzyl chloride groups were reacted with sodium dithiobenzoate. The pendent dithiobenzoate groups in the PVP copolymers can undergo a reversible homolytic cleavage under UV irradiation, and initiate the polymerization of styrene. The effects of stabilizer concentration the number of dithiobenzoate groups in multifunctional PVP macro-RAFT agents on the morphology, size, size distribution, and chemical composition of the polystyrene nanoparticles were systematically investigated. |
