Here, we for the first time report the physical gelation of two polymers, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) in the presence of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). The two polymers showed different microphase behaviors with SWNTs in binary-solvent, water and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). SWNTs embedded into the binary-polymer/binary-solvent system altered the physical gelation behavior, which, in turn, resulted in unique physicochemical characteristics of the resulting gels. The SWNT/PVA/PAN ensembles gelled successfully with appropriate amounts of water in DMSO and the gelation process was reversible. Importantly, the SWNT/PVA/PAN gels were carbonized via thermal treatment in a nitrogen atmosphere, which were used as electrode materials. |
