Model study of catalytic glycolysis of PET copolymer for chemically recycling process of PET derivatives |

PETG - a non-crystalline terephthalate copolymer with the presence of both CHDM (1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol) and ethylene glycol units in the chain - has been used widely in recent years because of its better excellent secondary porosity and optical properties than that of conventional PET. In this study, we investigated the effect of catalyst systems on glycolysis as a chemical recycling of PET, by surveying the reaction rate of the model trans-esterifications between model compounds and diethylene glycol when each catalyst system was applied. BHET (bis(2-hydroxyethyl)terephthalate) and BHCHT (bis CHDM terephthalate) were prepared as model compounds for investigating the trans esterification systems and their structure were analyzed by 1H-NMR. The catalytic ability was obtained by monitoring the reaction rate of the model trans-esterifications. The mixture of zinc acetate and DABCO with the weight ratio 2:1 showed the best catalytic efficiency. |
