Associative properties of hydrophobically end-capped polyethylene oxide urethane resin, denoted HEUR, were investigated in aqueous solutions with dynamic light scattering (DLS) methods at broad concentration range before the gelation. The hydrophobic end groups of HEUR associate in water to form flower-like micelle structure below the critical micelle concentration. At higher concentration, HEUR micelles are associated by HEUR molecules and form large aggregates. Five HEURs, HEUR 4000(8) (C8EO90C8), HEUR 4000(12) (C12EO90C12), HEUR 4000(18) (C18EO90C18), HEUR 2000(12) (C12EO45C12), and HEUR 10000(12) (C12EO225C12), were used for revealing the side chain effects and the main chain effect. DLS results indicate that the formations of micelle and large aggregate strongly depend on the difference in alkyl chain length and main chain length. The aggregate structures were also studied with the small angle neutron scattering (SANS). We obtained different SANS profiles by the alkyl chain length and the main chain length. |
