제목 Selective hydrodeoxygenation of bio-derived phenolic compounds to cycloalkanes on bimetallic RuRe/C catalysts
초록 Fast pyrolysis of biomass is being considered as a viable technology for the production of a liquid fuel, called bio-oil. The bio-oil, however, does not have a sufficient quality for direct use as transportation fuels or petroleum refinery feedstock owing to its high oxygen content. Hydrodexoygenation (HDO) is an effective way to remove excess oxygen-containing functional groups in bio-oils and convert them into hydrocarbon liquids. In this presentation, we will discuss how a combination of noble metals (e.g., Ru), typically used as hydrogenation catalysts, with an oxophilic metal (e.g., Re) can produce a synergy in selective C-O bond hydrogenolysis for phenolic compounds of bio-oils (e.g., 2-methoxyphenol). The bimetallic RuRe catalysts show the bifunctional characteristic, by which Ru is responsible for the activation of H2 and Re catalyzes hydrogenolysis. We find that the physicochemical properties of carbon supports alter the structures and HDO activity of the catalysts, and the formation of bimetallic nanoparticles is critical in the efficient HDO of phenolic molecules. The high activity RuRe/C is also demonstrated in a continuous-flow reactor using lignin-derived bio-oils.
