There are many issues in IGCC project development around the world. EU identifies 7 projects for support from the 11 applications in 2009. Most prominent EU IGCC project is Hatfield IGCC (UK, 800 MW), which was awarded €180 million. However, considerable public opposition to on-land CO2 sequestration in continental Europe has stalled several of IGCC/CCS projects in Germany and The Netherlands. US DOE has announced the selection of 22 CCS projects which cost US$575 million in total on September 7, 2010. Projects include large-scale testing of advanced gasification technologies, advanced turbo-machinery to lower emissions from industrial sources, post-combustion CO2 capture with increased efficiencies and decreased costs, and geologic storage site characterization. Most prominent IGCC project in US is the Duke project located at Edwardsport, IN. This project is under construction and the CCS is under study. SNG projects based on the coal gasification have been active in US. Tenaska considers the Coal to SNG “Hybrid IGCC” project in Taylorville, IL. ERORA also develops the Coal Creek Coal to SNG “Hybrid IGCC” project. |
