The Effect of Carbon Nanotube Aspect Ratio on the Electrical Properties of Polycarbonate/MWCNT Composites |

The effect of the intrinsic properties of multi-walled carbon nanotubes, such as aspect ratio and bulk density, as contributing factors to the electrical conductivity of polycarbonate-CNT composites were investigated. The experiment was conducted using four types of MWCNT with different aspect ratios and bulk density. Compression molding results showed a direct relationship between the bulk density of MWCNT and resulting resistivity of the composite which could be related to the ease of dispersion of the nanotubes into the polymer melt. Higher bulk density of the carbon nanotubes led to difficult dispersion and infiltration of polymer between nanotubes, hence the higher resistivity. Injection molding results showed an inverse relationship with the nanotube’s aspect ratio and resistivity thus composite with the highest MWCNT aspect ratio exhibited lowest resistivity |
