A system for the metal-free controlled radical polymerization (CRP) of methyl methacrylate has been developed by irradiation of visible light. In this process, a photo-induced CRP was performed in the presence of small quantity of phenothiazine dye as an organic photocatalyst. Methyl 2-bromo-2-methyl propionate acted as a radical initiator that can be activated by the phenothiazine dyes under irradiation of blue LED at room temperature. The activation and deactivation steps of photo-induced CRP could be regulated by light on/off. The photo-induced CRP technique offers several advantages over the previously reported CRP methods. First, this reaction occurs in high conversion under mild conditions in the absence of transition metal. Also, this protocol can effectively be conducted with low amounts of catalysts. |
