Silica dispersant synthesized by combination of living anionic polymerization and controlled radical polymerization |

In order to improve fuel efficiency for automobile, many researches focused on enhancing silica dispersion in styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) matrix. To reduce rolling resistance of tire, silica particles are added, which not enhance fuel efficiency but also physical properties. However, it is so difficult to disperse silica particles in SBR matrix. To overcome this problem, an amphiphilic polymer was synthesized and studied as dispersant for SBR/silica compound. To synthesize the polymer using different type of monomers, it is necessary to combine living anionic polymerization (LAP) and controlled radical polymerization. The poly(styrene-r-butadiene) (p(SB)) was synthesized by LAP and second block, p(poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate) (p(PEGMA)), was extended by atom transfer radical polymerization. Prepared polymers were characterized by GPC and 1H NMR. And the SBR/silica compounds with silica dispersant exhibited improved properties. |
