L-ascorbic acid, biologically friendly compound, has been investigated for direct polymer electrolyte fuel cells. Carbon is the most promising catalysts for direct L-ascorbic acid fuel cells (DAAFCs) due to its large active surface area and functional groups. High double-layer capacitance in acidic media shows high oxidation rate of L-ascorbic acid, which is also affected by pore size distribution. In our research, carbon blacks with various surface areas were loaded on gas diffusion carbon substrate with proper contents of polytetrafluoroethylene and electrochemically oxidized to generate functional groups which significantly increased the performance in DAAFCs. |
