제목 Various Functionalities onto Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWNT’s) via Friedel-Crafts Acylations in Polyphosphoric Acid
초록 Various functional groups were introduced onto electron deficient multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT’s) via Friedel-Crafts acylation in PPA/P2O5 medium, which we were previously developed.1 The compounds that used in this study were 2,4,6-trimethylphenoxybenzoic acid (TMPBA), 4-fluorobenzoic acid (FBA), 4-bromobenzoic acid (BBA), 4-aminobenzoic acid (ABA), 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA), 4-methoxybenzoic acid (MBA), and 4-ethoxybenzoic acid (EBA). Depending on the electron-donating nature of substituent to para-carboxylic acid on phenyl ring, the amount of substitution onto MWNT’s varied. For example, TMPBA was attached onto the TMPBA-g-CNT as much as 38 wt%, while FBA was grafted onto FBA-g-CNT just 2-4 wt% by TGA experiment. The progress of the reaction was conveniently monitored with FT-IR spectroscopy following the growth of the keto-carbonyl band around 1665 cm-1 associated with the product. In addition to scanning electron microscopic (SEM), tunneling electron microscopic (TEM), UV-vis spectroscopic data, the combined results from the elemental analysis and thermogravimetric analysis were used to verify covalently attached adducts onto the surface of MWNT’s. They are to be used for further modification of functionalized CNT to provide further clear evidences.
