제목 Synthesis of Poly(vinylphosphate-b-styrene) and its Blend with PPO for Fuel Cell Membranes
초록 Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is a very attractive material for desalination and pervaporation dehydration, because of its good film-forming property, good chemical and thermal stability, and high water permeability. E.L. Cussler et al. reported that the PVA membranes were much lower methanol cross-over than Nafion membrane. However, the proton conductivity of the hydrated PVA membranes can only reach 3.65 × 10-5 S/cm. To improve the proton conductivity of the PVA membranes, a number of research groups have investigated several combinations of PVA with acid or salts, such as H3PO4, H3PO2, heteropoly acid (HPA), and sulfosuccinic acid etc. Among them, PVA membranes doped with H3PO4 shows higher proton conductivity, but PVA-H3PO4 complex is very soft, water soluble, and H3PO4 leaches out of the membrane easily and the proton conductivity drops rapidly. In order to overcome these drawbacks, we synthesized poly(vinylphosphate-b-styrene) (PVPP-b-PS) copolymer via consecutive telomerization of vinyl acetate (VAc), ATRP with styrene, saponification, and phosphorylation with phosphorous oxychloride. Then, the blend membranes of PPO with PVPP-b-PS were prepared by solution casting method for DMFC membranes.

The PS, PVAc macroinitiator and PVPP-b-PS block copolymers were characterized by GPC, 1H-NMR, totration, and FT-IR spectrum. Table 1 shows the synthetic results of PVPP-b-PS. The performance of blend membranes was characterized by proton conductivity, methanol permeability, and thermal stability. Fig. 1, 2 show the proton conductivities and methanol permeabilities of the PVPP-b-PS/PPO blend membrane respectively. The ion conductivity and methanol permeability of the fabricated blend membranes increases with block copolymer weight ratio in PPO matrix.
