Synthesis of hydroxyapatite from bio-waste material |

Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is the calcium phosphate mineral found in vertebrate bones and dental enamel and dentin. Various methods of synthesis of HAp have been studied in the last decade or so. Extensive efforts have been given to develop new and economic route for synthesis of HAp. In this work, we have tried to synthesize HAp using biowaste as the calcium source. Clams, which are eaten widely in South Korea and the external shell that is thrown as waste, is used as calcium source. We have synthesized HAp by hydrothermal synthesis under neutral conditions and check the effect of time on the final product. We were able to get pure hydroxyapatite phase as confirmed from X-Ray Diffraction analysis. Morphology of HAp was hexagonal rods which was analysed using Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. |
