Synthesis and Characterization of Poly(methyl methacrylate)-b-Polystyrene from Hydroxyapatite Nanoparticles via Surface-Initiated RAFT Polymerization |

Well-defined diblock copolymer, poly(methyl methacrylate)-b-polystyrene (PMMA-b-PS), was synthesized from the surface of hydroxyapatite (HAP) successfully via RAFT polymerization technique. The surface of HAP nanoparticles was initially modified by attaching dithioester groups to the surface using 3-(chloropropyl)triethoxy silane and sodium ethyl xanthate. The block polymerization was initiated by treating of methyl methacrylate with surface functionalized HAP (as RAFT agent) to afford HAP-PMMA macro initiator which was subjected for polymerization with styrene to give well controlled HAP-g-(PMMA-b-PS). The structure and morphology of the nanocomposites were investigated by means of FT-IR, 1H-NMR, XPS, TEM and TGA. It was observed from the FT-IR spectra that polymer brushes were covalently attached to the HAP surface. The GPC analysis of the polymer cleaved from HAP surface suggested well-controlled molecular weight with relatively narrow polydispersity index. |
