We prepared functionalized mesoporous silica particles by co-condensation of an amphiphilic organosilica precursor with tetraethoxysilane, where the hydrophobic part of the amphiphile was tethered to the pore wall through a thermally reversible urethane bond. By the reaction with a thermally reversible urethane group, various functional moieties such as carboxyl, sulfo, and amino groups could be selectively introduced inside the pore under mild conditions without structural deformation. Adsorptions of CO2 on pure and functionalized mesoporous silica were investigated over a pressure range covering 0-1 bar at different temperatures. Compared to the pure mesoporous silica particle, the functionalized particles exhibited larger CO2 adsorption capacity particularly at low pressures and relatively high isosteric heats of adsorption due to the strong interactions between the polar functional groups with CO2. |
