An efficient gas barrier material is required in a variety of fields, from food and drug packaging to electronic devices, and photovoltaic cells. Particularly a thin, flexible and transparent coating with an excellent oxygen and moisture barrier is of importance in photovoltaic modules and electronic devices, to ensure their functionality and life span. In this talk, a new water vapor barrier composite material composed of polymers and water-scavenging nanocrystals will be presented. We utilize the assembling ability of block copolymers to develop water vapor barrier materials, with hygroscopic nanocrystals, in a well-defined structure. The nanocrystals in the polymer matrix provide a tortuous diffusion path for water molecules and simultaneously act as water scavengers. Given the chemical tunability of different kinds of nanocrystals and polymers, we envision this work can lead to the facile preparation of many composite materials as gas barriers and membranes. |
