The graphene paper that exhibits more than six-fold higher capacity as the anode of lithium ion battery compared to those previously reported for graphene paper anodes, was fabricated and evaluated. The few-layer graphene to make the graphene paper was prepared by thermal reduction of graphite oxide and modified by a novel method utilizing the inherent defects, epoxy groups on the graphene as active sites for the reaction with alcohols; methanol, 1-butanol, 1-hexanol, and 1-octanol. Gravimetric analysis, elemental analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that the reaction between the intrinsic epoxy groups on graphene sheets and alcohol to make sporadical alkyl brushes on the graphene sheets was run as designed. Raman spectroscopy showed the graphitic structure of graphene having conjugated sp2 C=C bonds was strengthened by the accompanied reactions such as solvothermal reduction, in spite of the covalent modification with alcohols. |
