제목 Fabrication of Plastic TN-LCD by Using In-cell Coatable Polarizers Based on Polymerizable Smectic LC
초록 The polarizer is the essential optical element in LCDs. The aim of this study is to fabricate coatable polarizer by using reactive mesogen as the “host” material. We designed and synthesized a new reactive mesogen possess highly ordered smectic phase. The “guest-host” type coatable polarizer was fabricated on either glass or plastic substrates. The results revealed that the coatable polarizers with a thickness of 4μm exhibited dichroic ratio(DR)=16.4 and relatively high degree of polarization (DOP>96%) with the highest DOP=99.3%. We prepared TN-mode LC cell with the coatable polarizer, in which the coatable polarizer acted as a polarizer and an alignment layer simultaneously. The TN-mode in-cell polarizer LC cell showed reasonable electro-optical switching behavior. The results reveal that this coatable polarizer by the smectic phase "guest-host" is promising to be the substitute for the conventional H-sheet polarizer for in-cell polarizer LCD and flexible display applications.
