Reverse Osmosis (RO) membrane has attract significant attentions due to the critical issues on environmental pollution and water shortage. The ability to provide cheap and simple water purification process is one of benefits of RO membrane. However, it suffers from poor stability and lack of long term durability in various filtration conditions. In present study, we introduced new series of RO membranes composed of cross-linked ionic block copolymers. Ionic sites in block copolymers provide the affinity with heavy ions and the existence of cross-linked hydrophobic matrix greatly enhances mechanical properties of the RO membranes under water purification conditions. The morphologies of cross-linked ionic block copolymers are altered by varying molecular weight, degree of cross-linking, and sulfonation level of copolymer. The morphology dependent water purification properties were studied by combining in-situ small angle neutron scattering and atomic absorption spectroscopy. |
