The bioplastics industry, which encompasses not only biodegradable plastics but also biomass based plastics, is drawing more attention in the last few years. While biodegradable plastics are environmentally friendly because of their degradability under certain conditions, biomass based plastics can contribute to lowering the emission of green house gases by utilizing biomass based feedstock such as corns. In particular, in view of the fact that the Bali roadmap adopted in December 2007 requires reducing emissions from deforestation, biomass based plastics is expected to play an increasing role. In this presentation the current status of the bioplastics industry in Korea will be reviewed, and the prospects will be discussed in comparison with the situations in other countries. |
