Cellulose is the most abundant, renewable, biodegradable, and biocompatible bio-resource on the earth. However, cellulose is hardly soluble in conventional solvents because of its intermolecular hydrogen bonds. Among the cellulose solvent system, ionic liquids (ILs) have been interested for their stability and recyclability. In this work, the ionic liquids 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride [AMIm][Cl] and 1-butyl-3- methylimidazolium chloride [BMIm][Cl] were utilized in the dissolution of microcrystalline cellulose and the effect of LiCl in dissolution of cellulose in these Ionic liquids was investigated. Dissolution process of cellulose was intensified and complete dissolution was achieved in the presence of lithium chloride. The preparation and physical properties of carbonaceous materials from cellulose dissolved in these solvent systems were also discussed. |
