제목 Poly(dimethyl siloxane)-based Membrane for High Temperature PEMFCs
초록 Poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) has been widely used in various applications due to thermal, chemical stability and low price. PDMS is intrinsically hydrophobic but it can be modified to be amphiphilic by substituting end groups with hydrophilic phosphorous groups. It would drive phase separation and result in forming the proton conducting channels.
In this work, hydroxyl-terminated PDMS were reacted with 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane by sol-gel method for 12 hr at 80 ℃ . Phosphorous oxychloride was added to this solution at 0 ℃ to bestow ion conductivity on the PDMS. After solvent evaporated, the viscous product were cast on the mylar film by Dr. blade (300 μm). Because phosphorous oxychloride fiercely reacted with water, P-Cl bonds in the obtained flexible membrane changed to P-OH bonds easily by water treatment. The phase separation between hydrophobic PDMS and hydrophilic phosphorous groups would form the proton conducting channels in the membrane. Final membrane showed thermal stability upto 250 ℃ and maintained the constant proton conductivity (0.04 S/cm) above 130 ℃ under dry conditions. FT-IR was used to analyze the chemical structure of membrane. Proton conductivity were measured by impedance analyzer (IM6, Zahner) under the control of temperature and humidity.
It could be used for a medium temperature proton conducting membrane at low humid conditions due to conducting mechanism of phosphorous groups at these conditions.
