Monodisperse polystyrene microspheres were produced in a single stage soap free emulsion method in aqueous/alcoholic media. Due to hydrophobic nature of styrene, the present method was examined in the polymerization of styrene adding cosolvent (ethanol) along with the addition of an electrolyte. The effect of varying the concentrations of different parameters such as monomer, initiator, electrolyte and cosolvent on the particle size distribution was investigated. Results showed that presence of cosolvent and electrolyte controls the stability of particle dispersion during the polymerization. The selection of suitable reaction condition produced monodisperse micron-sized polystyrene particles. |
