Granular Activated Carbon Single- Chamber Biocathode Microbial Fuel Cell (GAC-SCBMFC) for Simultaneous Decolorization of Dye Wastewater and Electricity Generation |

Dye wastewater creates severe environmental problems due to its immense color and toxicities. So it is very important to remove color from the dye wastewater prior to discharge. Here, we present a single chamber microbial fuel cell (MFC) with granular activated carbon (GAC) bioanode and biocathode without using any expensive materials like Nafion and platinum catalyst. After two days of MFC treatment, 78% of color was removed while COD removal was 79%. The MFC produced a power density of 1.68 W/m3 with 0.45 V open circuit voltage (OCV).It was found that lower the resistance, faster the decolorization rate. Here we treated the dye wastewater collected from dye wastewater treatment plant without further modifications using a single chamber microbial fuel cell with granular activated carbon (GAC) bioanode and biocathode. To our best knowledge, it is the first time using a GAC bioanode and biocathode for the treatment of the dye wastewater and electricity generation. |
