Conducting polymers have been widely combined with hyaluronic acid (HA) dopant to fabricate biomimetic conductive biomaterials. However, the influences of molecular weight of HA dopant have not been explored yet. Hence, we electrochemically synthesized polypyrrole films with various HA having various molecular weights. We found dramatic decreases of film conductivity and an increase of hydrophilicity as molecular weight of HA dopants increase. Furthermore, our in vitro cell culture study showed substantial reduction of cell adhesion. Several material characterization suggests that incorporation of high molecular weight HA dopant leads to the formation of additional HA layer and the hindrance of PPy stacking, which can account for the loss of film conductivity and cell adhesion. This study will give insights into the design and applications of functional conductive biomaterials. |
