Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are of great interest in scientific and academic research due to their remarkable mechanical and electronic properties. These versatile properties of CNTs offer a variety of potential applications. For the potential applications to be realized, it requires that carbon nanotubes are soluble (dispersive) in aqueous or organic media. However, it is difficult to homogeneously disperse CNTs in an aqueous solution and organic solvents because strong van der Waals attraction between CNTs leads CNTs to form aggregated bundles, which limits practical applications. In this study, we synthesize a new surfactant that is PEG-based amphiphilic molecule containing pyrene, where pyrene molecule is known to interact with the surface of CNTs via the π-π interaction. The ability of the synthesized dispersant to disperse and stabilize MWCNTs in water and organic solvents is examined. |
