For tissue engineering, the scaffolds must have several requirements such as high porosity, a large surface area, and a uniformly distributed and highly interconnected pore structure throughout the scaffolds. To fulfill these, it is good to prepare functional scaffolds with dual pore system for tissue regeneration. Because of highly porous and interconnected structure, it is ideal for cell seeding, cell growth, and the production of extra-cellular matrices. The scaffolds with dual pore system were prepared by the following processing method. Biodegradable polymers (PLGA and PLLA) were dissolved in the mixture of dioxane and water until polymer solution cleared. And the solution was poured on sieved sodium carbonate salts in appropriate dish. After the diffusion of the polymer solution throughout the salt, the dish was submerged in liquid nitrogen. The amounts of solvents and water crystals were removed by using the freeze-drying technique. To remove the salts, polymer-salts mixture disks were immersed into 50% of aq. ethanol solution and sonicated at 40℃. The obtained scaffolds were rinsed with water and vacuum-dried. The functional scaffolds with dual pore system were evaluated by examining pore size and porosity, mechanical properties, biodegradability, and cell culture.
