Correlating the Effect of Surface Termination Groups of Titanium Carbide MXenes with the Resulting Electrocatalytic Performance for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction |

MXenes with 2D layered structure possess attractive metallic conductivity, and stability for application in electrocatalysis. Here, we investigate the promise of Ti3C2 as supports for the Pt-driven 4-electron-driven oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in the development of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). Following the dealumination treatment of corresponding MAX parent materials in the presence of HF, the resulting MXene phase revealed interplanar mesoporosity. The obtained 2D materials were then exfoliated in TMAOH and characterized through SEM, TEM, ICP, XPS, and XRD analyses. The nature of the resulting surface functional groups is currently under investigation as a result of the selected synthesis steps. Our preliminary results are expected to shed light on the resulting interaction of Ti3C2 with Pt, and on the resulting electrocatalytic ORR activity and stability of these systems. |
