At the meeting synthesis and characterization of micro-sized Nylon 4 via suspension polymerization will be discussed. Nylon 4 is easily obtained by anionic bulk polymerization of 2-pyrrolidone (C4). However, in case of the conventional anionic bulk polymerization it is extremely difficult to obtain polymer in powder form from the reactor due to solidification of the product. C4 polymerization was carried out by anionic suspension polymerization in presence of 18-crown-6 (crown ether) which promotes polymerization rate. The suspension polymerization has been studied to investigate the effects of experimental variables such as stirring speed, amount of crown ether, phase ratio, emulsifier concentration, catalyst concentration, and initiator concentration on molecular weight and particle size and morphology. And their thermal characterization will be provided. |
